Teaching Your Toddler Manners

Toddlerhood is an exciting time for your child! They’re gaining independence, experimenting with their vocabulary, and exploring the world around them. However, they might also be picking up bad habits. There’s no better time to start teaching your child proper manners than at the toddler stage, so let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can help your child learn the value of politeness and respect.

Start Early

The earlier you start showing your child proper manners, the better. Children absorb so much of their environment at a young age – you need to make being polite the norm. As any parent knows, toddlers can often be moody and demanding, so you need to reinforce good manners through repetition, consistency, and always taking the time to explain to your child why what they’re doing is wrong, and how it’s impacting the people around them. Never underestimate your child’s ability to understand a situation once it is explained to them thoroughly!

Be A Positive Role Model

It should come as no surprise that your child looks up to you and will – consciously or subconsciously – model their behaviour after yours. You need to be a shining example of great manners for your child and always be sure to practice kindness and compassion when you’re interacting with them and with people around them. Your child will naturally pick up on your behaviour and understand that this is the way that people are expected to act together and within a community.

Involve Your Child

Whether you’re meeting with a friend or cashing out at the grocery store, be sure to involve your child in these fundamental social processes. It’s important for your child to understand how they should act in a diverse set of social situations and this will also empower them to be respectful and confident. You will be amazed at how quickly your toddler will pick up on these social nuances and these fantastic habits will stick with them for a lifetime!
