Children naturally do the things they love to do without prompting, so you should be able to determine their talents by simply observing them for awhile. However, children also naturally want to make their parents happy, so they may keep doing an activity that is pleasing to their parents long after it has stopped being exciting to them. Unfortunately, this can hinder them from discovering their true interests and talents.
Helping your child discover his/her passions and talents is extremely rewarding. It gives them something they can be proud of, something they can identify with, and something they can offer the world, all of which help to boost their self-esteem. It is not always easy to help children identify their gifts and passions, but you can definitely get some results by following these tips:
Expose Your Child To A Wide Range Of Activities
It is best that you don’t limit your child’s interactions to only the things that you are comfortable or familiar with. If you love basketball, your child may be more interested in soccer or tennis, or may not even be interested in any kind of sport. It is important that you remain open-minded about the things that may interest your child, and expose him/her to as many as possible.
Be Interested In Your Child’s World
Children love to talk about things that interest them, so listen to them as they share their newly acquired knowledge. Also be attentive to their concerns, as well as mentions of things they don’t like. If you know your child is not interested in sports, art, or playing an instrument, you are a step closer to discovering his/her interests and passions.
Encourage Your Child’s Passions
You should encourage your child’s dreams as opposed to squelching them. Even when those dreams seem unrealistic, allowing your child to follow his/her heart will teach him/her to work towards a set goal, even if the end result changes. As tempting as it may be to push your child from some activities, it is best that you allow them to enjoy themselves, unless that activity is dangerous.
It Is Okay To Let Things Go
As your child tries out different activities, you may notice some that they seem to be really good at, but don’t seem interested in. Unless your child seems to be developing the habit of stopping things halfway, it is okay to let them take the lead and pursue their passions. For classes or activities that you have to pay for, like learning a new language, it is best to urge them to complete the course or semester as opposed to quitting.
As a parent, you should never forget that your role is to nurture your children and provide a loving environment where they can grow into the individuals they are meant to be.
