5 Potty Training Tips for Your Toddler

Potty Training

Potty training your child is no easy task. It’s hard to know what tactics will work well for one child, while be ineffective for another. Though no approach is 100% foolproof, we’ve put together 5 of our favourite tips to ensure your child is on the fast track to potty training success!

Reading Together

Just as when going to bed reading together helps relax your child, the same goes for potty time. Reading together both relaxes and distracts your child to help take the pressure off. So when it’s time for your child to go, find one of their favourite stories, and put the focus on reading together!

Gold Star Chart

Children love to see the progress, and to know that they are growing and learning. Creating a star chart to track progress and create incentive can be a great motivator for your child. Simply gather craft supplies and create a row for going, wiping, flushing and washing. Give a star accordingly each time your child successfully completes each. They will love to see their stars all up in a row!

For The Boys

To help your child aim better (for boys), place a cheerio or fruit loop in the toilet for target practice. If you make a game of it and make it fun, this will make it seem less of a chore, and more of a fun thing to focus on. Most importantly, this will help your child to improve his aim!

Make Up a Song

For many, children potty training can be very stressful. The stress makes it more difficult for them to become accustomed, and can delay their progress. Another way to take the edge off and inspire a little fun, is to look up or even create a fun song for potty time. You may even rearrange the lyrics of a favourite top 40 song for a fun twist.

Calm and Patience

Arguably one of the most important factors in your child’s potty training is your own attitude. It’s of the utmost importance that you stay calm and positive during the experience, from start to finish. Your tone and expressions have more of an impact on your child than you may think!
