Specialty Days

Our Specialty Days

Throughout the year, we incorporate dozens of specialty days that prompt various activities and highlight important and influential days. There are three types of specialty days at Childventures. The first set is educational. These days prompt educators to incorporate the theme of the day into their programming and curriculum. For example, on Count Your Buttons day toddlers went around and counted the buttons on their classmates clothing as a form of Montessori: Early Math. For Polar Bear Day, JK and SK students learned about the polar bear habitat as a part of the science curriculum. These days offer the opportunity to break away from the ‘normal’ curriculum and allow educators to get creative.

The second type of specialty day is fun! These days allow children to come in with wacky hair do’s, wearing their clothes backwards or even their pyjamas. These days allow children and parents to show their creativity in addition to the team members. Other days such as Dinosaur Egg Hunt Day, have children working together to accomplish a shared goal. In the summer, there are many fun specialty days outside. Getting children active and outdoors is always a part of their daily schedule but Favourite Backyard Game Day shows children new games and activities that they can bring home with them. These days show them fun ways to get outside and move their bodies. Overall, the ‘fun’ days establish bonds between educators and children, and children and their peers as they go through the day in a relaxed setting. These days are also a break from the norm and give children something to look forward to.

Lastly, we include meaningful specialty days that highlight topics that can be difficult for children to understand. For International Day of Families, children learn about the ways that their friends parents may be different than their own. Children and team members celebrate and discuss the different families that they each have, whether it’s same sex parents, step-parents, single – parents, guardians and so much more. Although we are sure to promote these philosophies year round, the ability to focus on it for an entire day is a wonderful tool to build a foundation of understanding. Another example is Compliment Your Mirror Day. This day has children look into small handheld mirrors and say aloud a compliment to their reflection. In such a critical world, it is vital to instill a sense of self-love in children as early as possible. The specialty days at Childventures are a simple but effective way to incorporate important messages into fun activities and moments.
