Measure Up!

When we think about measuring our child’ oftentimes what comes to mind is doorframes marked up with pencil and ink showing their incremental growth. A great alternative is to measure with your child using everyday household items. For example, how many apples tall is the sofa? How many coffee cups wide is the TV? This is a terrific way to help foster spatial awareness.

Colour Cards

Make two sets of cards from construction paper and markers with the 9 basic colours (red, green, blue, brown, yellow, orange, purple, black, and white.) Start by saying the name of the colour, and ask your child to select the corresponding colour. This is a great way to develop a correlation between names and colours!

Sorting Shapes with Food

This is a fantastic and yummy way for kids to learn their shapes! On a blank piece of paper, draw out some basic shapes, such as: circle, square, triangle and star. Arrange an assortment of fruits, veggies and crackers that correspond with these shapes. Have your child match each food to the corresponding shape, and once they’re finished, they can have a yummy snack as a reward!

Pom Pom Play

This is a simple and inexpensive way to help your child learn their numbers. From the dollar store, get a variety of colourful pom poms. Spread them out across the table, along with a clear drinking glass. Give your child a number and ask them to put that many pompoms under, or into, the drinking glass. This is super easy, and will make learning numbers fun and playful!
